On Thursday, February 26 at 12:00 p.m., the NASW-MD Chapter proudly partnered with the Maryland Behavioral Health Coalition for the “Keep The Door Open” Rally on Lawyers Mall in front of the Maryland State House. The rally brought together hundreds of advocates, providers, and community members to stand in support of more than one million Marylanders living with mental health and substance use disorders.
Together, NASW-MD and coalition partners are urging the Maryland General Assembly to provide adequate funding for critical behavioral health services. As demand for care continues to grow, sustained and increased investment in community-based behavioral health programs is essential to ensure Marylanders can access the life-saving services they need.
The rally drew a powerful show of solidarity from health professionals across disciplines, united in a shared commitment to protecting and strengthening Maryland’s behavioral health system. Speakers emphasized the urgent need to fund critical services that keep doors open for individuals and families seeking care.
NASW-MD Executive Director Karessa Proctor, BSW, MSW, addressed the crowd on behalf of the Chapter, calling on lawmakers to prioritize adequate funding for essential behavioral health programs. Her remarks reinforced the social work profession’s commitment to advocacy, equity, and ensuring access to care for all Marylanders.
As the legislative session continues, hearings on the Behavioral Health Administration budgets will be added to the schedule. NASW-MD encourages advocates and community members to stay informed, engage with policymakers, and continue raising their voices in support of behavioral health funding.
