Calling All Experts, Specialists, and Well-Informed Social Workers!

WEAA

NASW-Maryland is continuing our partnership with the radio show, Urban Health Beat, and we are looking for more social workers interested in being guests on the show to provide a social work perspective on topics of mental and physical health of particular relevance to African Americans. Hosted by Marilyn Harris Davis, the show follows a discussion format, and airs Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

An upcoming December show will deal with exploring the winter holidays in a more inclusive way, and will focus on families with integrated religious or traditional beliefs and customs. Guests will be asked to talk about ways we can construct holidays that honor beliefs and customs but also reflect the blending of cultures.

Topics for other upcoming shows include obesity & body image concerns and substance & behavioral addictions.
If you would like to be a guest clinician on Urban Health Beat, email us at nasw.md@verizon.net.
Finally, we would like to develop a catalog of experts. Do you have expertise or training in a specific practice area? Are you the one colleagues often ask for advice on a particular subject? If so, we want to know! NASW-Maryland wants to keep track of our members’ specialties so we can contact you when we hear about opportunities for guest speakers, experts, and workshop leaders. Send us an email nasw.md@verizon.net and tell us about your specialty.

In the fall edition of The Maryland Social Worker, we explored some ethical implications of using Internet-based technology like Skype to provide counseling services to clients.

Since that publication, NASW’s Legal Defense Fund has written a two-part series about the legal and professional issues surrounding use of e-technology with clients.

Read the Legal Defense Fund’s findings about e-therapy and HIPPA, as well as recommendations for conducting an e-therapy session.http://www.socialworkers.org/ldf/legal_issue/2011/112011.asp
