Position Descriptions

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Attend and chair Executive Committee and Board of Directors meetings;
  • 2. Appoint committee chairs as necessary;
  • 3. Serve as ex-officio member of all committees;
  • 4. Provide leadership and encouragement to the volunteer leadership;
  • 5. Assist the Executive Director in conducting new Board member orientations;
  • 6. Report to the Board important interim matters;
  • 7. Represent or designate the representative of the Chapter at various functions;
  • 8. Partner with the Executive Director to achieve goals and objectives of Chapter’s strategic plan, oversee chapter activities and operations;
  • 9. Coordinate annual performance evaluation of Executive Director;
  • 10. Make assignments to other officers and Board members;
  • 11. Call special meetings if necessary;
  • 12. Serve as first Delegate from the Chapter to the Delegate Assembly;
  • 13. Attend as many NASW functions as feasible;
  • 14. Work with the CNLI to recruit new Board members and leaders;
  • 15. Along with other board officers, make calls to lapsed members;
  • 16. Attend the national Annual Leadership Meeting.

    Furthermore, the President-Elect:

  • must exhibit a strong commitment to social work values, ethics, advancement of the profession, social action, and NASW;
  • must be an NASW member in good standing
  • should have extensive leadership experience;
  • takes a leadership role in defining, operationalizing and reviewing the Chapter’s goals and objectives, program plans, activities, and policy decisions;
  • works closely with the Executive Director to assure the proper operation of the Chapter office and successful completion of planned activities;
  • understands the Bylaws, Chapter standards, fiscal operations, and staffing needs; and
  • is accessible to the volunteer leadership for questions and concerns, or handling problems that may arise.

Term of Office: 2 years, July—June. (1 year previous as president-elect)

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Attend Executive Committee and Board of Directors meetings;
  • 2. Serve on Chapter committees as requested by the President;
  • 3. Meet with the President and Executive Director when requested for planning and advisory purposes.
  • 4. Attend as many NASW functions as feasible (including the annual meeting);
  • 5. Provide leadership to the Chapter’s Board of Directors;
  • 6. Represent the Chapter at various functions as requested by the President;
  • 7. Serve as a Delegate from the Chapter to the Delegate Assembly;
  • 8. Provide to the CNLI names of possible candidates for Chapter positions;
  • 9. Along with other board officers, make calls to lapsed members;
  • 10. Attend the national Annual Leadership Meeting
  • 11. Fulfill other duties as requested by the President.

    Furthermore, the President-Elect:

  • must exhibit a strong commitment to social work values, ethics, advancement of the profession, social action, and NASW;
  • must be an NASW member in good standing
  • is expected to learn the roles and responsibilities of the Board President
  • should have extensive leadership experience, preferably to include recent
  • Board membership
  • Takes a leadership role in defining and implementing the Chapter’s goals and objectives, program plans, activities, and policy decisions;

Term of Office: 1 year, July—June

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Attend Executive Committee and Board of Directors meetings;
  • 2. Record the minutes of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors;
  • 3. See that all non-fiscal records of the Chapter are kept in good order;
  • 4. Monitor Board member attendance and vacancies;
  • 5. Review Board and executive Committee minutes prior to their distribution;
  • 6. Represent the Chapter at various functions as requested by the President;
  • 7. Assist the President and Executive director as needed;
  • 8. Assume responsibilities of the president in the absence of the board president, president-elect and vice-president;
  • 9. Provide leadership to the Chapter’s Board of Directors;
  • 10. Attend as many NASW functions as feasible (including the annual meeting);
  • 11. Provide to the CNLI names of possible candidates for Chapter positions;
  • 12. Along with other board officers, make calls to lapsed members;
  • 13. Fulfill other duties as requested by the President.

    Furthermore, the Recording Secretary:

  • must exhibit a strong commitment to social work values, ethics, advancement of the profession, social action, and NASW;
  • must be an NASW member in good standing;
  • is expected to learn the roles and responsibilities of the Board President;
  • should have extensive leadership experience, preferably to include recent Board membership; and
  • takes a leadership role in defining and implementing the Chapter’s goals and objectives, program plans, activities, and policy decisions;

Term of Office: 2 years, July—June

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Attend Executive Committee and Board of Directors meetings;
  • 2. Chair the Finance Committee and attend all its meetings;
  • 3. Oversee the Chapter’s fiscal operation in cooperation with Executive Director;
  • 4. Report on the Chapter’s financial status at Board of Directors and Executive Committee meetings;
  • 5. Make recommendations on fiscal policy, financial operations, investments, etc. as necessary;
  • 6. Sign checks and see that all fiscal records of the Chapter are kept in good order;
  • 7. Represent the Chapter at various functions as requested by the President;
  • 8. Assist the President and Executive director as needed;
  • 9. Provide leadership to the Chapter’s Board of Directors;
  • 10. Attend as many NASW functions as feasible (including the annual meeting);
  • 11. Provide to the CNLI names of possible candidates for Chapter positions;
  • 12. Along with other board officers, make calls to lapsed members;
  • 13. Fulfill other duties as requested by the President.

    Furthermore, the Treasurer:

  • must exhibit a strong commitment to social work values, ethics, advancement of the profession, social action, and NASW;
  • must be an NASW member in good standing;
  • is expected to work closely with the Executive Director in order to maintain oversight of the Chapter’s fiscal operation;
  • should have leadership qualities, (prior experience on the Board helpful); and
  • is involved in defining and implementing the Chapter’s goals and objectives, program plans, activities, and policy decisions;

Term of Office: 2 years, July—June.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Attend all Board of Director meetings and conduct the business of the Chapter in accordance with Chapter Bylaws;
  • 2. Review agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings;
  • 3. Participate in decision making process to fulfill the mission of the Chapter, to determine policies and set goals;
  • 4. Serve on committees and offer to take on special assignments;
  • 5. Interpret Board policies and decisions to the Chapter membership;
  • 6. Identify issues and concerns of constituency and advocate in constituents’ best interest;
  • 7. Support and promote the Chapter’s activities in their region;
  • 8. With other regional branch representative, plan and carry-out at least two branch meetings/activities per year;
  • 9. Give a timely call to new members from representative area and welcome them to the Chapter;
  • 10. Provide to the CNLI names of possible candidates for Chapter positions;
  • 11. Represent the Chapter at various functions as requested by the President;

    Furthermore, the BSW/MSW Representative:

  • must exhibit a demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the social work profession and to the mission of the Chapter.
  • must be an NASW member in good standing;
  • must be available to fulfill the duties of the office;
  • demonstrate leadership potential; and

Time Commitment: attend 4-5 Board meetings along with branch meetings and other committee and task force meetings.

Term of Office: 2 years, July—June, eligible for re-election two times.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Attend all Board of Director meetings and conduct the business of the Chapter in accordance with Chapter Bylaws;
  • 2. Identify and recruit student members;
  • 3. Distribute information to the school on NASW activities and encourage student participation;
  • 4. Assist the Chapter leadership and Executive Director in planning NASW functions targeted to social work students, serving on the Faculty/Student Liaison Committee if possible:
  • 5. Seek input from social work students as to their interests and needs in relation to NASW, and sharing such input with the Board of Directors;
  • 6. Review agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings;
  • 7. Participate in decision making process to fulfill the mission of the Chapter, to determine policies and set goals;
  • 8. Support and promote the Chapter’s activities in their region;
  • 9. Give a timely call to new student members and welcome them to the Chapter;
  • 10. Provide to the CNLI names of possible candidates for Chapter positions; and

    Furthermore, the BSW/MSW Representative:

  • must exhibit a demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the social work profession and to the mission of the Chapter.
  • must be an NASW member in good standing;
  • must be enrolled in a CSWE accredited BSW or MSW program during the year he or she serves as a Student Board Representative.

Time Commitment: attend 4-5 Board meetings along with other committee and task force meetings.

Term of Office: 1 year, July—June, eligible for re-election two times.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Identify potential leadership to run for elected positions (Board of Directors, Delegate Assembly, and CNLI);
  • 2. Ensure that the ballot includes candidates from a variety of practice settings so as to provide a needed diversity in the Board’s Composition;
  • 3. Attend meetings of the CNLI as often as necessary to complete the committee’s work;
  • 4. Assist with contacting prospective candidates for elected positions;
  • 5. Present to the Chapter a double slate for each position for which an election is being held;
  • 6. Meet election deadlines as set forth in the By-Laws;
  • 7. Ensure that all elections conform to the Affirmative Action Plan of the Chapter; and
  • 8. Identify potential leadership for other appointments as needed.

    Furthermore, the CNLI Representatives shall:

  • exhibit a demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the social work profession and to the mission of the Chapter;
  • must be an NASW member in good standing; and
  • have demonstrated leadership qualities and skills.

Term of Office: 2 years, July—June

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Attend pre-Delegate Assembly meetings at the Chapter and the Coalition level.
  • 2. Attend Regional membership meetings, prior to and following Delegate Assembly, to secure membership input about the issues under consideration and to report back to the Regional membership the pertinent results of the Delegate Assembly.
  • 3. Participate fully in Delegate Assembly by attending all sessions and by absenting oneself only after arranging for an alternate to assume responsibilities.
  • 4. If unable to attend Delegate Assembly, notify the Chapter President, as early as possible and insure that all materials are transferred to the alternate who will be committed to attend in place of the elected delegate.

    Furthermore, the Delegates shall:

  • exhibit a demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the social work profession and to the mission of the Chapter;
  • be an NASW member in good standing;
  • be or have been, active participants at the Regional, Chapter or National level;
  • have an understanding of, and an acceptance of, the NASW processes developed to deal with said social issues;
  • be able and willing (at Chapter expense) to attend pre- and post-Delegate Assembly meetings at the Regional, Chapter, and Coalition level.
