Course Description

Structural racism extends beyond individual prejudice and discriminatory behavior. It reflects the normalization of historical, cultural, and institutional systems that create advantages for some populations while producing cumulative and chronic disadvantages for historically marginalized communities. Understanding these systems is essential for social workers committed to advancing equity, social justice, and systemic change.

This interactive virtual training moves beyond discussions of interpersonal bias to examine the interconnected systems—including housing, education, healthcare, and criminal justice—that perpetuate racial inequities. Grounded in critical race theory and systems thinking, participants will explore how historical policies and practices continue to shape present-day institutions and outcomes.

Attendees will develop structural competency skills that can be applied within organizations and communities to identify inequitable policies, challenge systemic barriers, and implement sustainable anti-racist change. Emphasis will be placed on practical strategies for advancing equity at the mezzo and macro levels of social work practice.
