This course is approved for 3 MSDE Continuing Professional Development/CPD credits as course #22-66-04R and fulfills the requirements of the Maryland State Department of Education for certification of school-based social workers. Because social workers provide related services that are part of the educational programming of students with special needs, they must understand the legal mandates, federal and state policies and standards, as well as the specific instructional methods and technologies used in the classrooms that serve those students, from the least restrictive settings of inclusion to the more clinical settings, including residential.

Description: The risk of overdose for formerly incarcerated individuals is exceedingly high post-release from carceral settings. While this risk-related trend is well-recognized, the underlying contributing factors remain varied and less well understood. As justice-involved individuals attempt to re-integrate into society, they face a myriad of individual and systemic challenges post-release. Among these challenges are discontinuity in essential medical care and behavioral health services – including discontinuity with substance use treatment. A growing body of research continued to demonstrate that initiation and continuation of Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) in combination with social care reduces the likelihood of overdose and related risks for justice-involved individuals. This training will provide attendees with an overview of the individual and structural challenges faced by justice-involved individuals, the benefits of (MAT) and will underscore the critical role that providers in community and outpatient settings can play in the delivery of trauma-informed services and treatment.
